Loyalists
While some of the colonists were fighting for independence, others thought that it was a bad idea to depart with the British rule. These people were called loyalists. About one-fifth of the colonists, the loyalists were fine with the British taxes, and still imported goods from them. The patriots objected to them and attempted to take them out of business. The loyalists normally were newcomers from Britain, dependent on British goods for a living, Black slaves who were promised freedom by the British, or were related to a member of the Parliament. When the war began, many returned to England, but some settled in Canada.
